4. Definition of Industrial Disaster:

Actually there is no proper  definition of Industrial Disaster.

But, your project will look incomplete if the definition of Industrial disaster is missing.

So, don’t forget to include the definition.

Industrial Disaster can be defined as

“accidents or disasters which mainly occur in an industry due to

  • technical failure,
  • carelessness,
  • negligence or
  • irresponsible handling of hazardous material at work place.”

Moreover, It can also be defined as

” any accident that happens to a person in an industry during their work hour that results in any type of injury.

5. Types of Industrial Disasters:

This is the most important part of your project.

Industrial accidents are very common.

It may happen to anybody, anywhere and anytime in the industry.

In  United .States (US). Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), looks after the safety of 130 million workers every year.

However, despite the agency’s efforts, industrial accidents are fairly common.

In 2013, over 4405 workers died on the job.

i) Slips and Falls:

It is One of the most common type of accident in an industry.

Workers have to move with or carry heavy loads from one place to another.

Due to oil spill on the way or wet staircases the workers slip and injure themselves.

Sometimes, due to lack of training or lack of non-slip foot-ware is also the cause of injury.

ii) From falling objects:

In many industries, workers and engineers have to work at a great height and handle heavy machines.

There is always a possibility of falling objects.

iii) Pipe Burst:

6. Causes of Industrial Disaster:

Now a days, due to increase in industries, machines and chemicals, the work in industries have become very unsafe.

Therefore, unsafe working conditions in the industries are the biggest cause of Industrial accidents.

i) Unsafe Working Conditions:

Due to technical causes such as

old and outdated equipment,

defective tools,

old machines,

lack of storage facility and

poor lighting arrangements, are the major cause of Industrial accidents.

Moreover, there are Psychological reasons also responsible for industrial accidents.

Few of them are

working over time to complete the target,

low wages,

tiredness,

stress and

job insecurity etc.

ii) Unsafe Acts:

Sometimes the act of workers are also responsible for accidents in the industry.

Foe example,

Lack of training or skill to handle equipment,

defective body parts or

wrong attitude of workers also lead to accidents in industries.

7. Types of Industrial Accidents

i) Major Accident:

Permanent disability or death of an employee is known as Major accident.

ii) Minor Accident:

A cut in the body part or an injury without causing complete disability is  a Minor accident.

iii) Temporary Accident:

An injury which does not show any external signs like fracture which injures the employee for a short period of time is called Temporary accident.

iv) Permanent Accident:

An injury which makes the employee disabled for ever like blindness, severe burn etc. is called Permanent accident.

i) Bhopal Gas Disaster 1984:

  • It is one of the worst industrial disaster in the history.
  • It occurred on 3rd December 1984.
  • Almost 45 tons of poisonous gas (Methyl Isocyanate) leaked from the Union Carbide Plant.
  • The poisonous gas leaked from the plant and killed thousands of people living in Bhopal.

ii) Texas City Disaster 1947:

  • One of the worst industrial disaster in the U.S. was Texas city disaster.
  • It occurred on 16th April 1947.
  • A French cargo was carrying about 2300 tons of ammonium nitrate.
  • This started a chain reaction of fire and explosions in the nearby docked ships.
  • More than 580 people were killed.

9. Risk reduction Measures:

Risk reduction measure is a systematic approach to identify, assess and reduce the risk of disaster at work place.

(Just define Risk reduction measure in short). It includes:

Firstly, Industries must be located away from the residential areas.

Secondly, It should have Fire alarm and fire safety fighting system.

Thirdly, Separate  storage facility for Toxic substances.

Fourthly, Regular checking of equipment, machines and wiring.

Finally, Emergency exit, training, Ambulance etc. must be available.

10. Role of Government and community

  • The Government is responsible for the management of safety and health risks at work places.
  • However, Government must ensure time to time that all industries are following rules and safety measures.
  • Amendments of law regarding safety measures.
  • Compensation and  insurance of all employees.
  • Government must make proper arrangements for Providing Emergency service in case of disaster.
  • Moreover, Training should be given to the local and nearby people for rescue operations.
