4. Introduction:

The World Commission on Environment and Development defines Sustainable Development asdevelopment which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” In other words, when you don’t consider the wider future impacts while using natural resources, a lot of damage takes place and future generations have to suffer. Therefore, Sustainable Development is an action plan which helps us to achieve sustainability in any activity which makes use of resources. Moreover, it also demands immediate and intergenerational transmission.

Thus, the longer we continue to pursue unsustainable development, the more severe will the consequences be. Therefore, in order to undo the mess created by us, we must follow sustainable development.

 The concept of Sustainable Development was tossed by United Nations at Rio de Janeiro in 1992  Resources and Development. During this International earth summit, the first attempt was made to save the earth. Internationally, strategies and action plans were made for moving towards a more sustainable pattern of development. More than 100 countries participated. Other related civil society organizations also participated in the summit. People realized that Sustainable development does not mean a return to a pre-industrial era. Rather, it calls for

i) Firstly, continued economic growth

ii) Secondly, achieving sustainable livelihoods for all people–alleviating poverty and

iii) Thirdly, improving living standards while maintaining the integrity of the global environment.

 Note: But the process has been hindered by a conceptual obstacle: the belief that economic progress and environmental protection are mutually opposite goals.

To begin with, Sustainable Development has numerous benefits for the people as well as for the planet.

Moreover, it creates a healthier, safer, and pollution-free environment.

Some of the social benefits are:

  • Secondly, improve the quality of life for the present and future generations.
  • Thirdly, provide hope for a better future for the people as well as for the planet.

  • Firstly, helps in protecting natural resources.

  • Finally, mitigate and adapt to climate change

7. Goals:

Sustainable Development goals can easily be achieved by taking the following measures:

1. Create awareness for safe drinking water at the workplace as well as in remote areas.

2. Save water and promote Rainwater Harvesting.

3. Go for renewable energy sources.

4. Develop a habit of sustainable practices.

5. Encourage Reduce, Reusing, and Recycle

6. inclusive and skill-based education locally and Globally.

7. Promote, encourage and reward responsible behavior

8. Create employment to raise the standard of living.

9. Collaborate with business partners or NGOs to take it to the next level.

10. Lastly, there must be a good intention to make the earth a beautiful place for living.

There are many organizations that are making essential contributions to the environment, society, and for the sustainability of the world at large.

Moreover, they involve themselves in the field of research, conservation of resources, and creating awareness by implementing new ideas.

Below are some of the most influential NGOs working day and night to create a difference.

 1. Doctors without Borders:

Doctors without Borders is one of my favorite NGOs.

This NGO provides emergency medical aid to people affected by epidemics, disasters, conflict, or any deadly disease.

It is working since 1971 and won the Nobel peace prize for its contribution in 1999.

Moreover, this organization has treated millions of people across 80 countries so far. 

2. Greenpeace:

Greenpeace, is one of the largest nonviolent, direct-action environmental organizations in the world which mainly focuses on forests, climate change, toxins, and sustainable agriculture.

Today, it has more than 2.8 million active members working round the clock. 

3. Natural Resources Defense Council ( NRDC):

HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO SAVING RARE ANIMALS?

NRDC is a U.S.-based NGO working internationally mainly on the protection of the environment.

 It works on curbing global warming as well as wildlife protection, controlling pollution, and clean and eco-friendly energy.

 4. Oxfam:

Oxfam is also one of the most popular NGOs which work on international issues such as poverty, Human Rights and Injustice.

Moreover, this organization is actively spread over 90 countries of the world. 

5. World Wildlife Fund (WWF):

World Wildlife is one of the oldest, biggest, and most popular organizations which works on conserving nature and protecting bio-diversity.

It was founded in 1961.

At present, it has 5 million active members worldwide.

10. Conclusion:

To sum up, Sustainable Development is “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” when you don’t consider the wider future impacts while using natural resources, a lot of damage takes place and the future generations have to suffer.
