What is the Atmosphere?

“The atmosphere is the layer or shell of gases that surrounds the Earth.”

It is held close to the Earth by the force of gravity.

Gravity keeps the atmosphere close to the Earth.

Moreover, it moves along with the Earth as it rotates.

Also, the atmosphere moves with the Earth as the Earth turns.

Although the atmosphere cannot be seen, the atmosphere is essential for life, and the atmosphere plays a major role in setting weather and climate.

 Meaning of Atmosphere

“The word atmosphere is derived from two words: “atmos” meaning vapour or air and “sphaira” meaning sphere.

“Thus the atmosphere can be understood as the envelope surrounding the Earth.”

The atmosphere extends hundreds of kilometres above the Earth’s surface, but most of the atmosphere’s mass is in the lower layers.

The atmosphere is made up of a mix of gases, water vapour, tiny dust particles, and other materials.

Argon | 0.93% | An inert gas present in the atmosphere

Carbon dioxide | 0.04% | Essential for photosynthesis and influences Earths temperature

 Importance of the Atmosphere

The importance of the atmosphere is as follows:

i. The atmosphere provides oxygen needed by humans and animals.

2. It also provides carbon dioxide needed by plants for photosynthesis.

3. Moreover, the atmosphere regulates Earth’s temperature by absorbing and keeping part of the heat from the Sun.

4. The atmosphere protects us from solar radiation, especially through the ozone layer in the stratosphere.

5. Makes weather and climate through the movement of air, formation of clouds, and occurrence of rainfall.

6. Not that it also supports the water cycle by providing the medium through which water evaporates, condenses, and falls as precipitation.

7. Lastly, it burns up small meteoroids before they reach the Earth’s surface.

8. Therefore, the atmosphere acts as a blanket around the Earth and makes the planet suitable for life.

Layers of the Atmosphere

The atmosphere is divided into five layers.

They are as follows:

Troposphere

It is the layer and the layer in which we live.

all major weather phenomena—such as clouds, rainfall, storms, and winds—occur here.

The temperature generally decreases as altitude increases.

2. Stratosphere

The stratosphere is located above the troposphere.

The stratosphere contains the ozone layer, which absorbs much of the Sun’s ultraviolet radiation.

It is comparatively stable, making its lower part suitable for the movement of aircraft.

3. Mesosphere

The mesosphere lies above the stratosphere.”

Temperature decreases considerably with altitude.

Meteoroids burn up in the mesosphere.

4. Thermosphere

In the thermosphere, the temperature rises sharply with altitude because this layer absorbs energy from solar radiation.

The ionosphere, which contains ions, is important for radio communication.

5. Exosphere

The exosphere is the outermost layer of the atmosphere.

Here, the air is extremely thin.

The exosphere gradually merges into outer space.

Weather and Climate

 Weather is the condition of the atmosphere for a short period of time.

For example, weather can be sunny, windy, cloudy, pleasant, etc.

Climate is the condition of the atmosphere for a long period of time.

For example, climate can be equatorial, moderate, polar, etc.

Major Differences Between Weather and Climate

Time Period

Weather refers to the short-term condition of the atmosphere, while climate refers to the atmospheric conditions over a long period,

generally 30 years or more.

Change

Weather can change from hour to hour or day to day whereas climate changes gradually over a much longer period.

Area

Weather describes conditions at a specific place and time while climate represents the general pattern of weather over a larger region.

Examples

The sentence “It is raining heavily today” is an example of weather, while “Rajasthan has a dry climate” describes climate.

Prediction

Weather forecasts generally focus on the hours or days, whereas climate studies help us understand long-term patterns and trends.

Elements of Weather and Climate

The elements of weather and climate are the conditions that help us describe the weather of a place and understand its climate.

The major elements are:

Temperature

“It refers to the degree of hotness or coldness of the air. It varies with latitude, altitude, season and time of day.

Atmospheric Pressure

Atmospheric pressure is the force exerted by the weight of air on the Earth’s surface.

Pressure differences cause air to move from high-pressure areas toward low-pressure areas.

Wind

Wind’s direction and speed are features of weather.

Humidity

Humidity refers to the amount of water vapour present in the air.

High humidity often makes the air feel moist and uncomfortable.

Precipitation

Precipitation is the fall of water from the atmosphere to the Earth’s surface in forms such as rain, snow, sleet or hail.

Cloud Cover

Clouds are formed when water vapour in the atmosphere condenses.

The type of cloud cover influences temperature, rainfall and sunshine.

Temperature Zones of the Earth

Temperature refers to the degree of hotness or coldness of the air.

The temperature of a place is mainly influenced by factors such as latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, winds and ocean currents.

Generally, temperature decreases as we move from the Equator toward the Poles.

Three Temperature Zones of the Earth

Based mainly on latitude and the amount of solar heat received, the Earth is divided into three major temperature zones:

Torrid Zone

The torrid zone lies between the Tropic of Cancer (23½°N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23½°S).

It receives the direct sunlight and is generally the hottest zone.

Temperate Zones

There are two zones—North Temperate Zone and South Temperate Zone.

The temperate zones lie between the tropics and the polar circles.

The temperate zones receive solar heat and generally experience distinct seasons.

Frigid Zones

There are two zones—North Frigid Zone and South Frigid Zone.

The frigid zones extend from the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle to the Poles.

Frigid zones receive slanting rays of the Sun and are the coldest regions of the Earth.

Atmospheric Pressure

Air pressure, or atmospheric pressure, is the force exerted by the weight of air on the Earth’s surface.

It varies from place to place.

Generally decreases as altitude increases.

Factors affecting atmospheric pressure:

Temperature

 Temperature also affects pressure.

warm air tends to rise and creates low pressure, while cold, dense air tends to sink and creates high pressure.

Differences in pressure are responsible for moving air.

Winds

The horizontal movement of air from a high-pressure area to a low-pressure area is called wind.

Winds may vary in direction and speed depending on differences in pressure and the rotation of the Earth.”

Major types of winds include winds, seasonal winds and local winds.”

Winds play a role in transferring heat and moisture from one region to another and influence the weather and climate of a place.

Indian Monsoon

The Indian monsoon refers to the reversal of winds that brings major changes in the weather and rainfall of the Indian subcontinent.

The monsoon is mainly associated with the South-West Monsoon and the North-East Retreating monsoon.

It is extremely important for agriculture, water resources and the overall economy of India.

Advancing Monsoon

The South-West Monsoon generally reaches Kerala on 1 June and gradually advances across the country.

It brings rainfall to most parts of India during June to September.

The Arabian Sea branch and Bay of Bengal branch are the two main branches of the advancing monsoon.

Heavy rainfall occurs along the Western Ghats, northeastern India, and other regions.

The arrival of the monsoon provides relief from the summer heat.

Retreating Monsoon

The retreating monsoon refers to the withdrawal of the South-West Monsoon from India during October and November.

The monsoon first begins to withdraw from India and gradually retreats toward the south.

During this period, the weather becomes hot and humid, often called “October Heat.

The Tamil Nadu coast receives rainfall from the retreating or North-East Monsoon.

Tropical cyclones developing over the Bay of Bengal may bring rainfall to the eastern and southeastern coastal regions.

Factors Affecting climate of a place

The climate of a place is influenced by geographical factors.

The major factors are:

Latitude

Latitude affects the amount of energy received by a place.

Places near the Equator are generally hotter while places near the Poles are colder.

Example: India, located in the subtropical latitudes, experiences generally warm conditions.

Altitude

Temperature generally decreases as altitude increases.

Therefore, high-altitude places are cooler than lying areas.”

Example: Shimla is much cooler than Delhi during summer because of its altitude.

Distance from the Sea

The sea moderates temperature because water heats and cools more slowly than land.

Coastal areas usually have a climate while inland areas experience greater temperature variations.”

Example: Mumbai has a climate whereas Delhi experiences more extreme temperatures.”

Relief or Topography

Mountains influence the movement of winds and rainfall.

They can push air upward, which leads to rainfall on the windward side, while the leeward side becomes a rain‑shadow area.

**Example**: The Western Ghats cause rainfall on their western slopes while parts of the Deccan Plateau receive less rainfall.

Pressure and Wind System

Atmospheric pressure and prevailing winds strongly influence temperature and rainfall.

Seasonal changes in pressure over land and sea are particularly important for the monsoon.

Example: The South‑West Monsoon winds bring most of India’s rainfall.

Ocean Currents

Warm and cold ocean currents influence the temperature of coastal areas.

Warm currents raise temperatures while cold currents have a cooling effect.

**Example**: The Gulf Stream keeps parts of Western Europe warmer than places at similar latitudes.

Prevailing Wind Direction

Winds carry the characteristics of the regions from which they originate.

Winds blowing from the sea generally carry moisture while winds from land are often drier.

**Example**: Moist monsoon winds bring rainfall to parts of India.

What is Climate Change?

Climate change refers to long‑term changes in the Earth’s temperature and weather patterns.

While climate has naturally changed over Earth’s history, the current rapid warming is mainly caused by human activities, particularly the increased

concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Major Causes of Climate Change

Burning of fuels

Coal, petroleum, and natural gas release amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Deforestation

Cutting forests reduces the Earth’s ability to absorb carbon dioxide.

Industrialisation

Industries and power plants release greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

Agriculture

Livestock, rice cultivation and the excessive use of fertilisers release greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide.

Transport

Cars, trucks, ships and aircraft that use fossil fuels contribute significantly to greenhouse‑gas emissions.

Waste generation

Decomposing organic waste in landfills produces methane.

Measures to Prevent Climate Change

– Increase the use of energy such as solar and wind power.

– Protect forests and promote afforestation to increase carbon absorption.

– Reduce the use of fuels and improve energy efficiency.

– Promote transport, cycling and walking and encourage cleaner vehicles.

– Adopt sustainable agricultural practices and reduce unnecessary use of chemical fertilisers.

– Reduce, reuse and recycle waste and improve waste management.

– Spread awareness about sustainable lifestyles and responsible consumption.

Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gasses (mostly carbon dioxide, CO₂) released to the atmosphere from the activities of an individual,

organization, product or community.

It is usually expressed in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e).

Our carbon footprint comes from our everyday activities including using electricity from fossil fuels, traveling by car or plane, consuming goods and

creating waste.

A large carbon footprint increases the concentration of greenhouse gasses and leads to global warming and climate change.

We can cut our carbon footprint by using renewable energy, saving power, taking public transport, walking or cycling, reducing waste, recycling materials,

planting trees and making sustainable choices.
